Ocean Terminal to HK Disneyland

by Gina
(Philippines)

Hi. Need help please.

We will be onboard Princess Cruises' Diamond Princess on their Asian Cruise. The ship will dock in Hongkong on April 23, 2012 from 9am to 12 midnight.

Since we have kids with us (ages are 4 and 10 years old), we plan to spend the whole day at Disneyland.

I learned that the cruise ships dock at Ocean Terminal in Victoria Harbour. So if this is the case, what is the best way for us to get to Disneyland? How long is the trip? And if we want to get back to the ship by 8-9pm, what time do we have to leave Disneyland?

We are worried the ship will not wait for us so we don't want to be late. Is traffic bad during this time?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello Gina,

Ocean Terminal is a major cruise terminal located at Victoria Harbour, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong adjacent to the Star Ferry Pier.

Here's the most efficient way in getting to HK Disneyland from Ocean Terminal.

Get into the Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station thru Exit F (about 5 minutes walk from the terminal) and take the Tsuen Wan Line train heading towards Tsuen Wan and get of at Lai King station. Interchange trains to the Tung Chung Line going to Tung Chung and get off at Sunny Bay station. Finally, interchange trains to the Disneyland Resort Line train that will bring you straight to Hong Kong Disneyland. Total train travel time is 38 minutes @ HK$17.

The MTR trains operates until midnight so 8-9pm is not a problem when getting back to Ocean Terminal from HK Disneyland. Also, traffic is not an issue unless you opt to take a bus which is not recommended.

A taxi straight to Disneyland entrance from Ocean Terminal will cost around HK$200 for about 35 minutes drive.

Hope this help.

CHILD RATE
by: Gina

Hi Don, thanks for your help. Just a question, is there a child rate for the MTR or is it the same fare for all? Also, going back to Ocean Terminal from Disneyland, we just do the reverse for the MTR?

And what's the weather in Hongkong around that time? Do we need umbrellas?

Thanks so much! Appreciate all your help.

Hello Gina,

Yes, just follow above MTR route direction in reverse order when getting back to Ocean Terminal from Disneyland.

Children under 12 yrs old and seniors above 65 yrs old is entitled for half fare for most of Hong Kong's public transportation like trains bus and ferries. And when touring around HK, it is recommended to use an octopus card for convinience.

You should purchase an octopus card separately (one each person), a "CHILD" octopus card for the use of your kids and the "ADULT" octopus card for you.

To read more details about the octopus card, please click here.

Hong Kong weather during April is spring (actually from March to mid-May). Where the condition tends to be warm and humid with temperatures ranges from 20 - 25 degC and may require light overcoat or a sweater.

Octopus Card
by: Gina

Hi Don, it's me again. So sorry for all my questions :)

Just want to know your opinion, i think it's not practical for us to get an octopus card since we're not really touring around Hongkong. Like what i mentioned earlier, we will just spend our whole day at Disneyland. I read in your post that the octopus card has a stored value of HK$ 100 and since the fare for Ocean Terminal to Disneyland is only HK$ 17 one way or HK$ 34 for a roundtrip, we won't be able to consume the full HK$ 100. Since the cruise ship will only be docked at Hongkong for a day, we won't have time to go around the city anymore. Anyway our priority is to visit Disneyland only with the kids.

Am i right that we just skip the octopus card and pay the fare the normal way?

Thanks in advance.

@ Gina,

Yes, you're right. It is not practical in your case to purchase an octopus card since you only wanted to go to Disneyland and not actually touring around HK.

So your option is to buy a "Single Journey Ticket" with the price of HK$19 and HK$9 for adults and child respectively. Notice that the price mentioned above (HK$17) is when using an octopus card as it will give you some discounts.

This video will give you instruction on how to purchase and use the single journey train ticket upon arrival at the MTR train station.

Diamond Princess does not berth at Ocean Terminal. It is too large. It usually docks at the container terminal at Kwai Chung but on at least one occasion has had to anchor offshore in Junk Bay when no berth was available at the container port.

However, I believe that when it berths at the container port shuttle buses are provided to transport passengers to Ocean Terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui. However, HK Disneyland is in the opposite direction and it would probably be better to take a taxi direct to Disneyland from the container port, which should cost about HK$160 and take about 20 mins.

Hi Ian. Thanks for your help. Just some questions if you don't mind me asking. As you suggested, are there a lot of taxis readily available at the container port at Kwai Chung that we can take to bring us to HK Disneyland? What is the policy of taxis in Hongkong? Up to how many passengers can ride in one taxi? We are a total of 6 adults, 2 kids (ages 10 & 4) and 1 infant in our group. Can we just take 2 taxis for all of us?

Also, will it be easy for us to get taxis at HK Disneyland to bring us back to the container port at Kwai Chung? If we want to be back at the cruise ship by 10pm, what time should we leave HK Disneyland, considering traffic and travelling time?

Thanks again! - Gina

The vast majority of HK taxis seat 5 passengers but recent ones only seat 4 as the 5-seat HK taxi is no longer manufactured. So far about 1100 of the fleet of over 18000 are 4-seat. Child under 3 years of age is not counted as a passenger. I believe taxis can go into the container port but it is a vast site and taxi driver will need to know which terminal.

Your journey should to and from Disneyland should take about 20/25 mins each way and be unaffected by time of day (eg rush hour) as it is expressway almost the whole way to Disneyland. Allow extra time, however, just to be prepared for the unexpected.

I am curious if the family went to Disneyland in Hong Kong that asked questions. Please tell me about your experience.

We have to be back on the ship by 6 or so. I am going to Hong Kong November 2, 2012. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
